FESTIVAL

SURATÓMICA

art and science creation

30 Sept - 2 oct

DIGITAL

The Suratómica Festival of Art & Science Creation - is a space of gathering, creation and divulgation, in which creatives, artists and scientists from all around the globe encounter. With talks on scientific dissemination, art masterclasses, workshops and spaces for dialogue, the festival seeks to spread scientific and artistic thought in our region.

The union of art and science is currently one of the bases for the creation of new knowledge around alternative, more open and more equitable social structures. The Suratómica Festival is above all a meeting point for dialogue of various areas of knowledge, which under the ideas of collaboration, openness of knowledge and diversity, come together to think about new forms of organization, creation and alternative ideas of development.

A|CERCA DEL ORIGEN

In the inquiries of quantum physics, the great questions of the arts and sciences coexist.

A | CERCA DEL ORIGEN is both the proximity in space-time to the Big Bang and the inquiry into the emergence of the universe. The origin as the singularity, where the laws of physics as we know them do not manifest themselves, where time does not exist and therefore neither does "the past". The origin as the absence of borders. Why is there something instead of nothing?

The possibility of going back in time to a few milliseconds after the Big Bang, the discovery of the Higgs boson, the creation of monumental experiments to emulate nuclear collisions, and the creation of antimatter in a laboratory have in recent times accelerated the production of hundreds of theories, hypotheses and new understandings of matter and the universe. Where do artistic thinking and scientific thinking come together to explore the origin of the whole?

program

ART AND SCIENCE SEMINARS

The seminars will be made up of 7 talks, either of scientific divulgation or artistic master classes by creatives from around the globe that work in various areas of knowledge and will share their research and processes of creation.

The seminar will be presented via live broadcast, it will be open to the public and will not require registration.

TALKS

[ STREAMING ]

In the talks, various creatives from the Art and Science network will meet to discuss specific topics of art and science, related to the talks of our guests.

The talks will be transmitted live, they will be open to the public and will not require registration.

EXHIBITION

The exhibition A | CERCA DEL ORIGEN brings together global artistic creation, within the framework of the first Suratómica Cycle. This space will gather works of art and artistic projects of artists connected to the Suratómica Network, artists invited to the first Suratómica Residence at CERN and artists who participated in our Open Call in January 2020.

The exhibition will be open to the public through a virtual gallery for a month and will have a special slot at the festival where artists will share their ideas and interact with the participants.

workshops

The workshops are spaces of collective creation where participants will be able to approach each other through experimentation processes of art and science.

Their duration will vary between 2 and 6 hours / 1 or 3 days and prior registration will be required to participate.

dialog spaces

The dialog spaces are proposed as a time to discuss social, political and environmental issues, relevant to art and science, in which participants will be able to interact directly and share their ideas with some of our guests.

There will be 3 thematic tables, 15 people may participate in each of them and will require prior registration.

LASER TALK

The launch of the first Cambridge LASER talk takes place during the Suratómica Festival as the first event of collaboration between Suratómica and the Cambridge Centre for Music and Science with Satinder P Gill as the organizer and the Cambridge LASER Chair, the Cambridge University and its CRASSH institute (University of Cambridge Centre for Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences), and the New Hall Art Collection.

The Cambridge LASER questions the separation and propagation of art and science as distinct categories of knowing and being. It asks: What is creativity in science and the arts?  What is experimental practice in art, science, or philosophy?  Where do scientific and artistic attitudes, inquiries, methods overlap? How do they differ and complement each other? Can such understanding help shape our technological, urban and environmental futures.

We launch this discussion with an all women panel of leaders and pioneers in the arts, science and technology nexus.

cms tour

CERN scientist and director of the art@CMS initiative Michael Hoch guides us through CERN's CMS experiment facilities. In this virtual guide we will get to know the control room of the experiment, the tunnels and finally the CMS detector, or "Compact Muon Solenoid", the second largest detector of the Large Hadron Collider, essential for the discovery of particles such as the Higgs boson.
